When you enter a café or bar in Spain, you should greet the staff according to the time of day:
Hola - Hello
Buenos días - Good morning
Buenas tardes - Good afternoon
Buenas noches - Good evening/night
1. Ordering Coffee
To order coffee, use the phrase:
Un café, por favor - A coffee, please.
Here are some common types of coffee and how to order them:
Café con leche - Coffee with milk
Example: Un café con leche, por favor. - A coffee with milk, please.
Café cortado - A smaller, stronger coffee with a little milk (literally "cut coffee")
Example: Un café cortado, por favor. - A cortado coffee, please.
Café solo - Black coffee (literally "alone coffee")
Example: Un café solo, por favor. - A black coffee, please.
Café americano - American coffee (similar to drip coffee)
Example: Un café americano, por favor. - An American coffee, please.
2. Types of Milk
Specify the type of milk if you have a preference:
Leche normal - Regular milk
Example: Con leche normal, por favor. - With regular milk, please.
Leche de avena - Oat milk
Example: Con leche de avena, por favor. - With oat milk, please.
Leche de soja - Soy milk
Example: Con leche de soja, por favor. - With soy milk, please.
3. Additional
If the waiter asks:
¿Nada más? - Anything else?
Respond with: Nada más, gracias - Nothing else, thank you.
To pay, you can ask:
¿Me cobras? - Can you charge me? (Can I pay?)
To pay, you can specify:
Con tarjeta - With card
Con efectivo - With cash
4. Saying Goodbye
When you are done, you can say:
Adiós - Goodbye
Hasta luego - See you later
Hasta mañana - See you tomorrow
